We are knee deep in projects, contractors, improvements and building... but we couldn't resist the local Facebook community call for a 'farm in need of a guardian'. Hence the newest addition to our farm ZEUS. Zeus is a one and a half, Great Pyrenees with the most lovely disposition I've ever seen. Everyone has absolutely fallen in love with him on first tail wag.
The first few days were rough for poor Zeus who was getting used to our farm, and it being -12 out we were all a little apprehensive about leaving him outside. Come morning he was at the door to great us with a little hop of happiness and a wiggly tail wag.
The second night he went missing right after it got dark. Insert absolute PANIC. Everyone from the farm was out bellowing his name and we even got into the cars and drove around the neighborhood. A post to our local community group offered lots of tips about the Great Pyr Wander, as its something they tend to do if they don't have anything to guard. (Which as of right now we don't have yet)
He ended up coming back later that night, so we assumed that he decided that yes he lives here, but fence or not, as far as he was concerned that was there for the soft 'inside dogs'. That night we ordered a GPS tracker collar for him, so we will never lose him, and we can do some beep training to come when he hears the beep.
Day 4 since he has such a good recall when called, and he has consistently come back we were not that concerned, until he hoped the fence and managed to get his junk caught on some barbed wire. BLOOD everywhere.... New white floofy dog dripping in blood ... NOT a good sight. After some investigation it was determined that he managed to snag the tip of his peen and it was torn up. It took 5 of us to get him to let us look at it and clean it out with a salt water solution. Not the easiest thing to do with a 150 pound pup who barely knows us, and is probably in some considerable pain.
Well after talking with our animal Guru's at Deep Creek Veterinary Services, it was decided to call on Phases Veterinary emergency Clinic. They advised as long as he is peeing, the bleeding has stopped and he seems to be in good spirits it should be ok to wait till the morning.
Oh man.... Animals are such a big part of our lives and we see them as our children. Husband who shall not be named is still struggling with the idea of an 'outside dog'. Even though Zeus seems scared of any building and is super hesitant to go through any doorway.
Needless to say... 4 days old to us Zeus is part of this family now and I doubt anyone will get a good sleep tonight.
